The Road Not Taken....A Sacred Journey

One of my favorite Poems is by Robert Frost, “The Road Not Taken”.  I’m not sure exactly when I grew to love it, but I was very young.  This was the first poem/writing which I remember provoking me to think….

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;
5
Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

There are many interpretations for this poem…and, that is a good thing because that is what writing poetry is all about…provoking thought of a reader.

That is what I hope to do with my new blog “page” ….provoke thought.  Provoke MY thought.  And, if in some way, my humble writing provokes your thought, then that is good tooJ

The name for my blog page “Sacred Journey” came to me quickly.  I had not thought when I deactivated my Facebook page that I would be impacting access to my blog.  And, frankly, even if I had thought of it, I would never have thought anyone would really care that they no longer had access.  But, as God is ‘oft to do, He surprised me.  I had many individuals contact me to ask that I not shut down my blog….humbling to say the least.

And so, I set out to figure out the best and simplest way to do that, thus….my new Facebook page, Sacred Journey.
As I head into the final half (God willing, I will make it to my goal of 100 years), of my life, I view things with a much more intimate and personal vision.  I now understand that all of life is as Ann Voscamp’s blog indicates, “A Holy Experience”.  That’s not to say that everything in our lives “feels” holy….surely my friend Katie’s potty training experience, my friend Nancy’s falling accident, and divorce is not holy in the sacred sense….

But, is it?

Do we become holy within the things we go through and in how we respond to them, ultimately?

I think so.

I love the kid’s Bible definition of HOLY:  “Holiness means that God is scrubbed up and clean in every way”

Holiness seems too heady for children to understand, but it's not.Simply put, God's Holiness means that He's Perfect and Clean in every way.Kids can trust that God is Perfectly Loving, Perfectly Truthful and Perfectly Faithful.Exploring Holiness cultivates an unshakable trust and transparency with a God who is Perfectly Dependable.Teaching your children that God is Holy -- that He's Perfect and Clean, will give them a stable foundation for an unshakable faith.
http://www.dg4kids.com/attribute/god-is-holy/

For, if we can teach our children, and ourselves, that God is Holy…Perfect….Clean in every way…that he is perfectly loving, perfectly truthful, perfectly faithful….

It’s not only his perfection which is important (because we know we can never be perfect on our own), but it is the knowledge that by being a part of Him, we are made perfect IN Him…

Holy….Sacred

For me, I find in that, great comfort.

That because my God is Holy, He makes us Holy in Him.

Pure, perfect….HIS

So that, as we travel through life, we don’t have to worry about being perfect on our own.  We don’t have to really worry about which path we take, we have to worry who we take with us on the journey…

Thus, it becomes a “Sacred Journey”              ….with HIM

Sacred has many definitions, but the ones which touch me intimately are “devoted, dedicated and revered”.

 I can do those things….

I can devote myself to worship, to family, to service
I can dedicate myself to being a good wife, mom, daughter
I can revere those things God gives me in life:  safe home, good job, faithful friends

I can do those things on a daily basis and I can do them with a heart for Him which grows a heart of holiness in me.

Then, even the smallest, most minute thing we do matters…

It will matter that I apologize after blowing up at my kids after a bad day, it will matter that I make right a disagreement with a co-worker, it will matter that I take time to send a note to a sick friend, it will matter that I actually DO pray for someone I commit to pray for…

It will matter…those little things and those big things, those public things and those private things…

And, taking HIM with us on our journey will “make all the difference”……

I love this analysis of Robert Frost’s poem, because I think it rings true….

There are times in life when we have to make choices and we can never
go back to that time and change our choice.

So we make the best choice - and then make the best of that choice

I love that last sentence…

“So we make the best choice (as we see it at that time) and then make the BEST of that choice.”

And, ultimately, that is all we CAN do…

Even as a young girl, I always took that last passage in the poem to mean that by taking the one less traveled by I was taking the path God was on….

I took to heart Matthew 7:14 “But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”

That’s the path I wanted to take.
That’s the path I want to take.

That is the path which leads to the SACRED JOURNEY of life.

Blessings,

Lesa

If It’s Monday, It’s Mama

Respite at the Lakehouse…..
It is of great comfort to me that you are enjoying Fall Break with someone who loves you very much at a place which is very lovely and that the two of you are having a very wonderful time together.  What a wonderful gift to both of you….I pray your time together is one you will treasure forever…..

A Call to A New Season….

It occurred to me last Saturday evening that I have spent a lot of time writing these past three years of our family’s struggles, sorrows….journaling our “walk” back to a healthier, happier family.  I have laid bare my mistakes, my poor decisions and frankly, my sins….it is what God laid on my heart to write and so I did.  I also addressed the opinions of others in my writings…of me, defending and sorting and explaining.

I want to change the direction of my writing and so, will start with your weekly letter.

A dear relative of mine told me recently, “Lesa, get out of the way of God.”  “Let God handle all aspects of your life and just set about to do His work as best as you can with the clarity He is giving you.”  “God has worked out all your matters already, He’s just waiting on you to give it over to Him.”

She is correct.

The moment I give my life and all of it’s little details….is the moment God will pick them up and work them out for His good and His glory.

Ian shared something with me this past week in an effort to positively help me guard my words…I want to share it with you in hopes it will help you as well:

“From listening comes wisdom and from speaking repentance”   ~unknown author

The greatest hurts in my life have begun around things spoken to me or about me.  I believe the greatest pain I have caused others has been things said by me.  This includes written things.

Make positive changes to NOT do that!

So, I am making changes to my life which I hope will assist me in NOT doing this and in NOT receiving this.  I pray you consider doing this as well…Ian is joining me…

We are removing facebook for a season, if not forever.  It is a wonderful tool to keep in touch with loved ones and friends, but it consumes the soul and can be used as a tool to hurt, whether intentionally or not.  I challenge you….consider a season of no facebook or at least consider going through your page and removing people who put out things on there which you know to be unHoly….unGodly.  In fact, I encourage you to ONLY have friends who ARE Godly and who are striving to be good users of the page.

We are seeking to speak less and do more.  Your Uncle Jim Millstead often quotes the passage as one of his favorite..

Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you,”  I Thessalonians 4:11

I encourage you to sit at the knee of your Uncle Jim and others who live by this creed.  I encourage you to strive to be more like this yourself and we will join you in your striving.

We are seeking to be more in the Word and less in the TV, movies, music, etc.  There is not necessarily anything wrong with TV, movies, etc. but if you spend more time on those things than you do in the Word, then that is a problem.  Let’s change that!

We are seeking to be more physically fit.  The healthier physically you are, the more likely you will be fit in other areas of your life because you will have more energy and focus to do so.

We are seeking to be with those who live a positive and Godly life both inside and outside of the church.  Chose those you spend your time with wisely for they will impart their views on you can you cannot help but be changed.

We are seeking to search for the good in others.  Easy it is to find fault, criticize, or disparage people.  We are all guilty of this.  Let’s not do that.  Let’s assume good…if we want God to see good in us, shouldn’t we assume good in others?

We are seeking to forgive and to let go.  At some point in everyone’s life, you will be required to seek forgiveness and to give forgiveness.  Let’s be proactive.  It may not be received, but if you have at least sought it, that is all you can do. You can always chose to forgive.  Forgive.

We are seeking to simply love and love simply.  If you wait to love someone only when they become loveable, then you may never find success.  Love regardless.  Love in spite of.  Love in sincerity.  That does not mean you tolerate bad behavior.  In fact, you do not.  But, you are called as a child of God to love.

It is the Greatest Command.

I think you and Ian may talk about some of these things as you spend Ladder/Daughter time together….this is just a start for our family.  But, we are committed….

Join us?

We love you,

ILYAOYMC,

Mama

I Finally “Get It”…..Training is for Life

I am fifty years old…Fifty…50….an age where I used to think that by now, I would have ‘it”….Life….all figured out.  But, I am daily realizing that I will never have it all figured out.

Because I will forever be in training…

I am in training and will be in training all of my life.  Whether it be training to get physically fit, to become a better mother, daughter, sibling or employer.

The training of myself never ends, until I end.

Not only do I realize that my training days will never end, I also am realizing that training is lots of work and that I don’t look particularly good while doing it.

On September 18, 2012, I committed to getting my body back into as physically good shape as I can.  Since that time, I have worked with a trainer to bring to life muscles which had atrophied these past years….it has NOT been easy.  At first, I could barely get through the 30 minutes of workout needing an additional 30 minutes just to “recover” after each session.  At first, I gained weight rather than lose it (WRONG direction I told Chad, my trainer, who assured me it would come down).  At first, I struggled on weighing, measuring and lower my food intake and drinking more and more and more water.  Chad told me it is a decision….do you want to “become” different or do you want to stay the same so that in a year from now, nothing has changed? Change requires training my “old” ways to leave and teaching my new ways to come into the forefront!

I have been doing that.  I am successful in some areas….not so much in others.  I am faithful to train with Chad, probably because I pay him and really want to do well at each session.  I am struggling with the weighing/measuring/monitoring of what I eat.

And, that’s okay….

I am in “Training”……

My daddy told me yesterday as we were discussing some life issues, “Sis…your Mama and I have figured out that if we want to be a certain way in our life…Godly, healthy, financially stable, serving of others…etc….that we have to work at it…we have to “train” to be that way…”

“every day…every day…every day”

That is why my parents read their Bibles daily ( to train to be closer to God and more Godly in their lives).

That is why my parents walk over 100,000 steps (yes, this is the truth) a week…(to train to be physically fit).

That is why my parents attend church every time the door is open and why they host home church in their homes (to train to be Godly servants).

“Sis…if you want to become something, you have to train yourself to become that, it won’t just happen”.

And, you must do it….Every day.

I believe my Daddy…I believe my Mother...for they live lives of "training"....in all ways.  A Godly example for me..my siblings...others to see.  Every day.  Every day.  Every day.

Training….training…training.

Will we always look beautiful to others while we train?  No.
Will we always have perfect form in our movements as we train? No
Will we always have the perfect work out? No

But, what we will have change….one small step at a time…to a better us.  A better me…

I think of my training as a season of transformation.  I told Chad I want “Whole-heart/body” training……

I want to grow in all ways….

Stronger relationship with God…..study Him

Closer relationship with my family….love them

Deeper friendships with friends…spend time with them

More physically fit body….exercise

Regardless of what I want to grow stronger in….if I truly want to change in that direction, I have to “train”….

And, training is not easy…in fact, it is one of the hardest things I have ever had to do because to train whole-heartedly, I have had to look at my whole life…

How did I get here?  How did I get this “unfit”?  Not pretty!

How do I leave here?  How do I change for better?  Not easy!

But, I can do this training….

It is a choice.

While I know I have a long way to go and many things to keep working on…while I know I will struggle and sweat and won’t look pretty doing it..

I really do want to grow and be and become better in all ways…..

Better in His ways

And so, I will look to the rest of my life as that of a student who is in training….

Training…and training and training….

Every day….every day….every day!

Blessings,

Lesa

If It’s Monday, It’s Mama….
Finding Joy is a Choice!

In the wee hours of the morning, as I starting thinking about what I wanted to share with you today, words came very quickly to mind…flowing thoughts about the past 48 hours…..

But, then I caught myself….

Because the past 48 hours have been pretty painful for you and our family…and, it occurred to me…if we truly mean what we wrote and talked about last week….about living joyfully, then shouldn’t we start now?

So, instead, I want us to share joy today….praises for the good things, the blessings in our lives.

A joyful experience:  You helped a person last week in a real and meaningful way…I am so proud of you for doing that.  I think you were proud of yourself in a real and humble way.  Isn’t it great when God uses us in the service of another human??  I know as a parent that if I had a person stop and help my child, possibly saving their life, I would be eternally grateful.  I imagine this young man and his family feel the same way today.  I think what made me most proud was your humble approach to aiding this young man.  You didn’t rush in and try to take over the situation, you just did what you medically knew to do.  You worked side by side with two others to help him.  What could have ended disastrously, was made better by your assistance and the assistance of others.  THAT is what life is all about.  What also is exciting to me was that you were prepared….never having helped someone like that before, having the pressure of being the “expert” in the crowd (only b/c you had on scrubs and everyone thought you were a nurse or doctor), you didn’t shrink away for helping….you remained calm and “carried on”.  I am proud of that.  Hearing you describe what it was like to assist this young man is something stored on my mama’s heart forever….especially your words…”it just came to me what to do….and the three of us helping…we just quietly worked together”.  LOVE that.

We just quietly worked together….in Jesus name.

I pray you have many, many more opportunities to do that and that you always remain humble of heart.

Another joyful experience…meeting a young man who is kind and considerate and gentlemanly and who treats you like the young lady you are!  Not sure how this will work out, but, am glad you have this season to know a nice young man.  I pray often that if it be God’s will you should marry (but, I hope not for a LONG TIME), that He bring you together with a Godly man.  We have discussed often the importance of dating men who are Christians….and, honestly, it helps when they come from a Christian home as well.  You do marry the family and not just the person.  I think you are blessed to have a few Godly men in your life….cherish those “friend-ships”.  I am grateful that you seem focused on school, I pray you grow in focus on worship and in the interim, am grateful you have Godly dates in your lifeJ

Another joyful experience…preparing to spend time with Ladder over your Fall Break.   What a compliment to him that you would like to spend time together.  I know he is touched and is very much looking forward to it!  And, a little get-a-way time for you is good too!  I hope you will be able to rest, relax and be pampered a bitJ  Enjoy these memory making days….they are God’s gift to us…call your Grandparents while you are there!!  Enjoy the lake views, walk in the chilled air….read your Bible, cook healthy meals together, enjoy the scenery….it is an absolutely lovely place.

Finally….I could go on and on, but one thing I want to leave you with….

“life is short if you live to be old”….

As our whole little community became aware this past week with the loss of Tyler Hicks, life is truly short…make the most of your each and every day, surround yourself with Godly people, precious family members and good friends.  Make the most of each day…

Be a blessing to someone every day….and, start with yourself.

And, in all things, strive for being JOYFUL!

It is a choice we make every day....every single day.

Mama

Special Edition by request, “If It’s Monday…..on Thursday”.

The gift of motherhood is one I do not take for granted.  Since I was young, I very much wanted to be not only a mama, but a wonderful, Godly mama.  In my journal from the 1980s, being a Godly mother was the third goal of mine, the first being a Godly woman and the second being a Godly wife.  I was eighteen when I wrote that list. I would not change a thing about it, even after all of these 50 years.  I think you and I both know that I have failed at times in this endeavor, but God does not expect the perfection that we humans expect from one another.  He desires a seeking, striving heart fully given over to Him.  I can promise you, Madison, your Mama has a seeking, striving heart.

Fortunately, I had an extremely Godly mother to raise me.  I always knew she was not perfect, but she was disciplined of heart, soul and mind.  That discipline was/is a direct result of placing God in the center of her woman-hood, wife-hood, mother-hood, sister-hood and all of the other “hoods” a woman wears in her life.  She also challenged me to do the same….

I, in return, challenge you to do the same.

Ian told you in a letter to you awhile back, “don’t follow your Mama or me” because we are human and will fail.  We have told you not to follow friends, relatives, and even the church because all are human and they may fail you when you need them the most.  They are there to nurture, encourage and even reprove you at times, but ultimately the path to Christ is one only God can lead you to and through.

That is what I pray for you….a direct path to God through Christ.

But, that means I have to let you go…

To Him.

If I grow you up and you do not have a foundation based on Him, then I truly believe I will have failed in my “Mama-mission” to which God called me.  I don’t want to do that.

I want, when you lay my head down to rest that final time, to know you are ready…you are prepared…

You are His

I pray your life is filled with a bouquet of family, friends, co-workers and fellow saints, but I pray that bouquet confidently stands in the vase of Christ…your ultimate foundation.

This won’t happen unless you do that on purpose…

With purpose

For His purpose.

It is my mother’s job, to try to help you build a strong foundation so that when I am no longer here, it is okay….you won’t need me….you will have HIM.

I learned this lesson in a very powerful way…..and, it has grown in my heart all these years…

We had a very sweet family member on your dad’s side whom I absolutely loved.  Sherry was real and authentic and kind.  In her, I found a real friend, one whom I grew to love and respect and admire.  Sherry had excellent work ethic and great tenacity.  She was practical and yet, she had one of the most ferocious (in a GOOD way) hearts I knew.  She was sensitive to the underdog, the weaker person, the struggling heart.  She had high expectation and expected you to as well.  She had strong opinions and most definitely would share them with you, but then, she would turn around and encourage you to express yours.  She was a true friend.

She and I both had daughters around the same age (you and Cousin Logan).  I remember like it was yesterday our last conversation together.  You and Logan wanted to ride your bikes around your Mamaw and Papaw’s Cross Creek neighborhood.  We had just the week before taken off your training wheels and you were a little bit wobbly as you rode around the block following your Cousin, Logan.  Logan, of course, bounded around the circle ninety to nothing because she had experience.  You, of course, tried to follow suit.  It was such a happy moment….two mamas watching their daughters laugh, kick up their feet in the sheer joy one gets from a free spirited bike ride.

Logan rode way out in front of us….even way past you.  The further she got, the more anxious I got.

I asked Sherry, “don’t you think you should reign her in?  Make her come back closer to us?” “Aren’t you worried she might fall and hurt herself?”

And, then Sherry said words which etched on my Mother’s heart even unto this  very day….

She reached over and grabbed my left hand….stopping us from walking and allowing you girls to get even further from us.

“Lesa…If I don’t let Logan try her wings in front of me where I can help her if she falls, how will she be ready if I am not there some day to catch her?”  “It is my job as her mother to help her get ready.”

In less than two weeks, Sherry was killed in a car crash and I was attending her funeral.

Now, I don’t know if God laid that thought on Sherry’s heart or not.  I don’t know why she had just those words to say to a fearful me, but I was forever changed by what she said to me that day as we walked together.

And, from that day forward, I have tried to be the kind of Mama who was preparing you….I have not always succeeded in that….but, it is a goal.  I think it is the goal of most Mamas.

And, you are making progress in that direction.  I see it daily….I hear it in your words, I see it in your school work, the way you deal with others, your job and even your worship.

Life is a journey……you will change and grow and “become” your whole life.  You will make good decisions, bad decisions, silly decisions.  You will have great joys and deep sorrows (I pray for protection from those).

The ONE thing you can count on is Him.

And, if that is the only lesson from me you ever learn, then I will feel like I have succeeded in the mission God gave me when He allowed me to become your Mama.

One thing I want you to remember….God’s plans are to prosper us, not to harm us.

Jeremiah 29:1111 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

This does not mean we won’t have struggles and strifes in our lives.  We will.  But, it does mean that if you are walking toward HIM, He is with you….just like Sherry and I were watching you and Logan, riding along in life and moving ahead….He will be there when you fall….to catch you…..to right you and put you back on your bike.

Find comfort in that knowledge…

Find peace

Find JOY!

Our reflection to the world of Christ’s love for us is a great gift we can return to him while we are living….

We can make is a dark and despairing one….or we can make it a bright and joyful one.

The choice is ours

I pray that you chose JOY!!

And, I want you to know…..everything you go through is preparing you….for life…..for living….

 For HIM….

I just know when He turns to your life….He has to smile.

So, go …..prepare yourself.  Armor up!!

“Be strong and courageous and do not be afraid…The Lord goes with you each and ever day.”

And, for as long as I am blessed to live….I will too.

What a privilege and an Honor it is to be your Mama.....

ILYAOYMC,

Mama

If It's Monday, It's Mama----Friendships over Gifts

If It’s Monday, It’s Mama- Friendships over Gifts

Sweet Daughter,

I have been reflecting a lot on your personal character and you displayed something this weekend which to others may not be a big deal, but to me was huge.  You did two things:

One, you went to a friend’s baby shower without a gift….gasp!!  Most people today would NEVER go to a baby shower or any kind of shower without a baby gift.  They would be too concerned about etiquette and less concerned about the friendship.  You went.  It made me so proud of you and I know your friend would rather you come empty handed than not at all.  And, look at all the fun you had!  The memories you made and the pictures you took are priceless!!

Two, you told your friend the truth.  You told her that you could not afford a gift for the baby at this time but you wanted to support her by attending her shower with your “person”.  How bold and how honest.

You understand at 22 what I did not learn until 48.  “Appearances” for the world’s sake are meaningless.  The world would tell you to stay home and not go be with your friend giftless.  But, you understood that the gift of your friendship is more meaningful to your friend than any monetary item you could purchase.

I am so proud of your great heart.

I am even more proud that you told your friend the truth.  She understood.  And, you promised her a gift when you can afford it which she knows you will deliver to her.

In fact, you invited me to join you and I will.

This is character of the finest kind….

I have to think this makes God smile…..if you can be honest about the little things and attend your friendships with such great care and compassion, then I can only imagine what wonderful things you will do with the big things.

Having said that, I do love it when we plan in advance and prepare and have things done “on time”….because the little detail of planning is also a way you can show others you care about them.  Saving to buy a gift is a Godly discipline.  In this case, this did not apply because you learned of the shower on short notice, but do keep in mind that managing your finances and your gift opportunities is a good thing to aspire to do.

I am just grateful than when there is not time to plan, you take the road of friendship over the road of propriety….

I think in this you will always be the winner!!

Mama

Life is Like a Ball of Yarn...

Life is Like a Ball of Yarn….
The more days I live, the more I begin to feel that rather than a puzzle, pieced together in perfect pattern, albeit in any possible random order, life is more an unraveling and a revealing, rather like a ball of my mother’s left-over yarn, pieced together in un-matched joining and multi-colored mating, to be unwound slowly and revealingly when knitted together in a fine mitten or scarf.

The truth of the knitting’s color scheme won’t be known until Mama has finished her last knit, pearl, stitch….but, the more the yarn gives way to the needle’s story, the more the final piece is evident.  It is when done, you glimpse the truth of the color of her piece.

That truth is always rock solid in the center of the yarn-ball, but in the unraveling becomes alive.

To me, this is much the way of life.  We are little pieces of yarn, fashioned together and knitted from pieces of our family’s skein which is joined together to form the work of art of us.  Mama’s soft pink lacy cut, with Daddy’s navy worsted twist, a part Granny’s fingerling and a length of Grandpa’s bulky weight all joined together to make me.

I have this vision of God and me, sitting together around the fireplace in my kitchen.  I am sitting at the table and God is standing behind me.  We are posed over two extravagantly beautiful knitting needles…my hands up close to the milky white of the ivory needles (mine are ivory not steel) and God’s hands placed over mine in teaching expression.

We are there to knit my life together.  God shows me how to fashion the yarn on the needles to get started.  We’ve already made our yarn ball and are ready to set the slip knot on the needle.  The slip knot is the foundational knot for the entire piece of me.  Next, we move into the cast phase, which is really the backbone for my entire life.  This cast can be as short or as long as God would choose and as I am gifted.  Once the cast is set and the length determined, then we move to our first knit stitch.

The casting phase is critical to life because it sets the foundation for all which is to come.  That is why legacy in life is so important.  The stronger our familial heritage, the stronger our cast.  The more aligned and strong and straight our cast, the stronger the base of our whole knitted piece.  The cast is what my family gives to my life….I am the knitted stitches.

I envision God telling me this as He quietly whispers to me to “stop” at a certain point in my cast.  I don’t want to count the actual casting because then I would know the length of my days…and, it is not that I should know, but rather that I should move to the next phase…knitting the stitches.

There are several stitches I could choose from, but as a novice, I am directed to the knit stitch.  It is the simplest and easiest to learn….my hand moves back and forth, filling one needle while emptying another.  Quickly, the form of my life grows.

I am a novice knitter, it is apparent from my alternatingly tight and then lose stitches, but I am assured that over time, I will grow more consistent.

This knitting takes time.

It takes patience.

Slowly, almost painstakingly, I  form one stitch at a time, feeling awkward and disjointed….I can see the yarn ball unraveling into the work on my needles and the colors start to tell a story….

My story

Told with simple stitches in simple pattern with simple hands using simple needles.

Then I hear the words, “it is time”…

Time to learn a new stitch…

The Purl…

Both stitches are a part of good knitting, both have a specific purpose.  One is worked at the back of the knitting, one is worked at the front.  Both form unique patterns in a knitter’s piece of work.  When used together, the knit and the purl, that is what forms the lovely patterns of a scarf or a sweater or

Me

Knit stitches tend to be smooth and flat.  Purl tend to be bulkier and uplifted.  Like seasons in a person’s life.

We knit together, God and I, in the quiet of my kitchen.  Back and forth, back and forth….and then it happens.  In what is a simple, modest pattern, a twisted piece is found.

We stop, undo the stitches back to the most recent whole stitch and then start again, error corrected.

Back and forth, you can hear the clicking of ivory upon ivory…God’s warm hands on mine…

Knitting…

I don’t know when His hands leave mine…but, after a time, I begin to see knotted, mangled stitches form on my work….large balls of yarn, tight stitches blend with too loose stitches and my knitting….my life is a mess.

Where are those guiding hands?  The Master knitter’s leading gone, I had not been able to keep the pace of fine knitting.

He asks me…what do you do now?

I am frozen….I don’t know.  How do I repair such a mess as this?

“You know what to do….think on it.” He says.

Slowly, painfully, I undo each ugly stitch taking my work all the way back to the most recent beautiful stitch.  It was a painful undoing…so much work lost.  So hard to start those stitches over.

“Why did you leave me?” I ask

“I never left you, I was here. Always by your side…but, you went on without me…never noticing my absent hands…focused on your stitching and not on my leading.”

It’s true.  I did that.

Grateful I am as He places large, warm hands over mine, giving strength to my re-knitting….stitches back in place, needles making soft noise as we work together on the frame of my life.

Knitting is not an art of perfection.  It is a part of the Master’s plan.  He does not call us to knit our lives perfectly.  He calls us to keep His hands on ours as we piece together the framework of our lives in the masterpiece He has designed.

My final piece will not be without the evidence of flaws….it will not be of perfect color and evenly matched stitches.  In fact, I am quite certain, it may not even be lovely in the eyes of the world.

But, my final piece….the blanket of my life….will bear the stitches of one who has tried hard to keep the Master’s hands on hers while the knitting is done…

And, in God’s eyes, it will be beautiful….I will be beautiful.

At the end of the day, as my final stitch is cast and I lay my needles down, it is only his eyes which will matter.
Blessings,
